Good idea...but don't expect perfection. The conversion will be from
anywhere near perfect to unusable.

Robert--
Why can't InDesign do a better job?
I just ask because I know there is a Quark Xtension (third party) that pretty much converts a PageMaker file into Quark. And it seems to work pretty well.
Any idea if such third party plug-ins are available for InDesign or possible in the future?

Re: Convert Pagemaker to InDesign
You want to go from InDesign to Quark?
If you want to go from PageMaker to InDesign it could not be easier if you collect for output your PM file where it includes links and fonts.

Re: Convert Pagemaker to InDesign
For everything about going from PageMaker to InDesign, download and read Adobe comprehensive pdf about it here < <http://www.adobe.com/products/indesign/pdfs/PM-IDconvguide_Final.pdf>>.

Re: Convert Pagemaker to InDesign
A properly designed PM file should come in quite nicely. But the text
engines are so different and PM had the nasty habit of embedding small
graphics without telling you.

So did I, but most users didn't. Add to that the fact that PM would
always prompt you that embedding would increase the file size do you
want to do it anyway? Thinking that it wouldn't work if you said no,
they'd say yes and wind up with a file full of embedded images.
BAD, BAD, BAD.

Yup. And add to that many of those embedded files were picts a nasty combo to open in ID.

Re: Convert Pagemaker to InDesign
I agree about the embedding process from PM.
I go back to my PM doc & un-embed everything before converting to ID.
I've found that some embedded images just don't make it through the conversion process too well (print very poorly).
Just a helpful tip.
