Convert Selection To Vector Mask?

I have a section of a picture selected, and I would like to convert that selection to a vector mask on a layer with a black background. I have looked in the manuals and help file, but I could not find out if this is possible.

Might somebody be able to suggest a way?

If a selection is active [marching ants] when you create a mask, the mask takes on the shape of the selection. So, just make your selection, create a solid black layer and add a mask to it.

Hope that's what you're after.

The mask button says "add layer mask", not "Add vector mask"

search for the phrase "Creating and editing vector masks" in the online help (F1).

Go to the paths palette and create a path from the selection and save! Simple!

I did. Layer > Vector Mask > Current Path

But current path is disabled because it is a selection not a path.

Perhaps I should ask how to turn a selection into a vector shape?

perhaps you should look in the manual... you'd be done by now. there's a button in the paths palette for convert selection to path.
