Default Converting ID 2 doc to ID 3 doc problem II

After converting an ID 2 doc - which worked well with ID 2 - to an ID 3 doc with ID 3 and making the PDF book, one complete column of text is missing in the PDF. Only that one column.

The column with text is shown correctly in ID 3 layout editor and in the story editor, no anomalies.

Also no error messages, warnings or whatsoever when making the PDF via the export to pdf as a book.

Any help is very much appreciated, because editing the indd is impossible I guess. Re layout of the doc under ID 3 will be an enormous amount of work.

It practically means ID 3 is NOT COMPATIBLE with ID 2 files, they CANNOT be used under ID 3.

Maybe somebody has an idea how they still can be used.

    Thanks.

It would seem to me that the problem is more likely in the PDF export area than in the ID2->3 conversion, since the text appears OK in InDesign 3.

Can you try printing to a PostScript file and distilling that? If so, is the problem still present?

Are you using multicolumn text frames or individual frames for each column?

How many columns do you have, and which column is missing?

That has not been the case for most users. If it were, there would be a
    lot more posts like yours.

Have you checked for corrupt fonts?

    Hello Stu,

Thanks for your suggestion, here is what I've tried:

The indd file version 3.0.1 export directly - file->export as pdf - does not give a problem. The generated pdf contains the text in the column. Displayed with Acrobat 6 Pro.

After closing Acrobat, ID 3 displays the window with the indd file but completely without any text and when trying to close the window ID 3 crashes.

The indd file is part of a book with 5 indd files and when using the indb for the book and doing a "export book to pdf" causes the text in the one column to disappear.

The book has been exported to a pdf tens of time under ID 2 without giving any problems. They started after ID 3 converted the file to a newer version.

The page has 3 individual columns which are defined in a master page. There are about 30 pages in total all with the same master and only one page causes this anomalie. I also checked the text threads, but they all look alright. I checked the text in the story editor, no anomalies, no weird hidden characters either. It's a complete mystery to me because the text that disappears is exactly the text that fits in that one column.
So there must be something in that file that ID 3 doesn't like.

But what and how to repair it, if possible?

    Thanks again,
    Leon.

    Bob,

I don't know how many users are making use of the book "export to pdf" function, that's where the problem manifests itself.

The font used is Arial regular. It is also used by Golive CS and Illustrator and Photoshop and ID 2 and nowhere I ever had a problem with it; also not after installing ID CS.

So my guess is still it's something in the converted indd file.

What happens if you close the INDD file after exporting, before you display the result in Acrobat. When you reopen the file, is the missing column there?

    Hello Stu,

Thanks for the suggestion. I have a rather small workstation - P4, 1 GByte main mem, 120 GByte disk, Win XP Pro - and maybe that's the reason.
I did the test as you asked, 1st export the booklet PDF without invoking Acrobat 6 Pro. No crash from ID 3 and no error messages. Then open the PDF in Acrobat 6 Pro and voila everything is there and it looks fine.

FYI the "old PDF" was lvl 1,4 and 3 MByte, the "new PDF" is lvl 1,5 and 2,2 MByte.

So the reason: too small config? or corpses in mem? or??
