Converting Multiple Word Documents Into OnePDF With Bookmarks Based On Headings

I am using Acrobat Standard 7.0.8 and Word 2004 on a Macintosh. I have written a software manual with 24 chapters, with each chapter being a separate document. In Word, I have set page numbering to be based on the chapter number. Pages in Chapter 10 would appear as 10-1, 10-2,10-3, etc. The numbering happens automatically base on a hidden value in one of the Headings. I also have a Table of Contents and an Index as separate documents but generated using Fields. What I want to do is produce one pdf document of the manual that I can distribute to our customers. I have created pdfs using both PDF Maker and the PDF feature on Mac Print. When I open them in Acrobat, I want to use the "New Bookmarks from Structure" feature to generate Bookmarks based on the Headings in the Word document. However, this feature is grayed out and unavailable. What is the best way to proceed? Should I combine all of the Word pdfs into one large Acrobat pdf and then create Bookmarks manually? Should I combine all of the Word chapters into one large Word document that is numbered from 1 - 200, or can I stay with the Chapter based numbers? What I would like to do is make one pdf based on multiple pdfs from the Word documents and then turn the Table of Contents into Bookmarks. Also, how do I create a searchable feature based on the index? Thanks!

PDFMaker on the Macintosh is not as comprehensive as the Windows version - for example, it doesn't add any structure to the document from which you could then create the bookmarks.

You will either need to create the PDF from Word/Acrobat on Windows, look at 3rd party tools such as ARTS Arialist or do it manually.
