ID can only open single language version 3 or 4 Quark files. Platform is
    not a factor.

Don't know what version of Quark it is --it comes across as an "unknown file" and when I ask InDesign to open it, it doesn't show up in the folder ... it's "blanked out" -- it was a file sent from a fairly large printing company so i imagine they're up to date with their software ... and they're ignoring my request for a regular pdf for crying out loud! So, I'm still in hell here, deadline for that ad to go in the brochure is next week :(
    Thanks for your help though.

    Anita,

Download the Quark 6 demo and make a PDF from it. You may need to delete "Quark Demo" or something like that out of the PDF.

Check to make sure you have the right suffix (.qxd) on the document. If not, jst manually add it. Then go to InDesign and manually open (under file>open) that should work, if not, look up Marxware, it has file converters, costs about $150, but if your in a pinch it would be able to convert the file to an InDesign doc for you.
