There is no support for extended character set in FreeHand.
If you can actually see the characters in FreeHand you probably have a font
in which roman characters are just replaced with chinese. Then the problem
is probably caused by error in the font.
To get a few japanese characters into FreeHand I had to do following steps.
I typed the text in Japanese text editor (JWP is an excellent freeware
editor) saved it and imported it into InDesign. Then I converted the text
into path exported as eps (or pdf) and imported it into FreeHand.

Re: converting text into path
I'm pretty sure that it's not a roman characters or fonts that replace with chinese character. The weird thing is i managed to typed the characters that i want but i couldn't convert it into vector. If i use Chinese text editor to type them, i have to re-arrange the whole text manually in Freehand (which it'll take me ages to do that) as i dont have InDesign software.
Any other alternative??

Re: converting text into path
this is a round about way to convert the text to paths if your doing limited amounts of text.
type the text you want to convert then select the trace tool from your toolbar and set the colors to 1; trace resolution to high; path conversion to outline; trace conformity to tight (10); noise tolerance to min (0) and color tolerance to min (0) then select you text with your pointer tool the select the trace tool and drag a box over the text you want to convert.
this should trace it fairly well.
it may help to make the text really large on the page first.
good luck.

Re: converting text into path
i've tried the tracing technique that you thought me. i worked but the only problem i'm facing rite now is that i need to tidy up the curve bits of the characters as i'm doing a large amount of chinese text and this will take alot of time. any way i can solve this problem?
