You can use GDM (Gnome Display Manager)
    or KDM (K Display Manager)

You can customize either to look really "cool" at the login screen. Most
distros come with at least 1 of the 2.

The "login screen" used by Red Hat is GDM, and it's distribution

I "hacked" my Red Hat 8.0 system to give me a custom login screen. Most of
the work needs to be done as the "root" user -- so be careful!
Starting in /usr/share/gdm/themes, I created a new directory "mkdir Mine"
and then I copied everything in the BlueCurve directory to my new one.
Working in the new "Mine" directory, I did a "file *" to get an idea of
what everything is, and an "ls -l" to help figure out which file had the
big graphic background. I then used "gimp" to modify that file for the
background I wanted. Then, I modified the text file
GdmGreeterTheme.desktop (an xml file) with the obvious changes and,
finally, launched the login chooser (click the "Start" [Red Hat] button at
the bottom left corner of the display, then click "System Settings" and
then "Login Screen") to select the "Mine" alternative. Note that I did not
change the screenshot.png file which holds a miniature version of the
so in the desktop's login chooser does not show the correct display. You
could change that graphic using "gimp" but I decided it wasn't worth my
    time.

There's probably a better and more "correct" way of doing this but,
nonetheless, the above steps worked for me.

Nobody has suggested the WINGs display manager (WDM) yet. See
<http://voins.program.ru/wdm/>. It allows you set the background image (mine
is a penguin on an Antarctic ice block and about to jump into water) and
configure the login box in quite wide limits.
