Create the destination base directory and either:

    cp -R /src/dir/name /dest/dir/name

    or

    cd /src/dir/name

    tar cf - . | ( cd /dest/dir/name ; tar xvf - )

    copy -morv source destination
the destination does not have to exist first.

cp and copy are different Use man to learn more (man cp & man copy)

I do it an old goat way that works on all OS:

    1) Make desitination folder, example: /tmp/dest_folder

    2) 'cd' to source folder

    3) run command: "find . -print | cpio -pvd /tmp/dest_folder"

You can explore other options of cpio command with 'man cpio'.
