copying patterns - Adobe Illustrator Macintosh

In illustrator 10, Mac. I have a pattern created by a friend. It was in an 8.5x11" box. I needed the final print to be that size. I also wanted to print (2) 8.5x11's on a 11x17 sheet of heat transfer paper. When I copied the pattern, the copied pattern shifted postion. In other words it was not an exact copy. The workaround I used was to expand the box to 11x17. My question is about the shifting pattern(changed postion of the pattern elements)when copied. Thanks....

Bruce, patterns are aligned to the ruler origin, not the object that it fills. If you move the ruler origin, you'll see your pattern shift position. Expanding the pattern as you did is the best way I know to position the items and have them remain identical.
