    Default Corel CDR import

I can't place or open Corel 8 CDR files into Illustrator CS. I have reinstalled but no joy. AI says it "...is a format which cannot be placed" or "....is in an unknown format and cannot be opened". Can anyone help.

I think the problem is your file might have been saved in Corel 8 bidi format. I'm not sure if there is a way around this.

Maybe if the text was converted to curves you'd be able to open it.

Thanks for the input and I will try the EPS format tonight. But I wanted to point out that AI states that it supports the CDR format for imports. It doesnt say about converting to other formats.

Actually, what I have been doing as a workaround is just exporting to AI 7 format. Corel10 doesn't export to a later version of AI.

We do the same thing with our old, legacy CDR files. They seem to always work best if we open them in CorelDRAW, export them out as AI, and then open the AI file into Illustrator. Minor tweaking is usually required, but much better results then importing CDR files directly into Illustrator.

Bob Hill can give some insight into this. If you are pulling up any of the CD clipart, a further compression is used on the image, and the way to get them into IL is to open and resave them (preferably as an eps or ai file).
