Try renaming the file before opening. It's a pain, but sometimes it works. Leave off the file extension.

Why would leaving the file extension off make any difference?
Just SaveAs to a new name as a .psd.
You might also try to open the file from inside Illustrator.

Well, it's kind of hard to do a "Save As" if they can't open the file to begin with. :)
Michael hasn't been back yet, so we don't know if the network issue is at play here.
