Could not launch external image application

I have Acrobat 5 and sometimes I can right-click on an image, choose "edit", and it will open in Illustrator 10. Sometimes it won't. Even though I have previously editted an image does not guarantee that I can edit it again. When it doesn't it gives me the message "Could not launch external image application."
