    Default Creating double page spreads

I have been trying to figure out how to create a pdf that will keep a double page spread (two A4 pages in a Quark document) intact. At the moment, when creating a pdf from a Quark document, Distiller 'breaks' the DPS and puts the right half of the double page spread as a page below, therefore breaking up any image (graphic, photograph) that was running across the two pages. Is there someway to keep a DPS together? I'd appreciate your help on this matter. Thank you.

Thank you for the suggestion (you wouldn't happen to work for that software company would you) but I don't see why an Adobe Acrobat user should have to fork out more money for a plug in when the task trying to be done - creating a double page spread from aQuark document - should be readily achieved in the programme as it is.

I'm not quite sure what you want to achieve is possible without the extra plugin. (i don't work for quite no)

How is it you create the pdf exactly from quark? (include versions and os as well please)

I think he wants to display a two page pdf in Acrobat side by side.

    Distiller just creates two pages.
The standard Facing and Continuous - Facing in
Acrobat displays Page one on right side, Page two on the left side of the next section.

I work on a magazine (A4 in size) and we use Quark to design the pages, which is standard here in Ireland as In Design has not caught on yet, though it is a very good programme. I am not a graphic designer but a sub-editor, though I am responsible for turning articles in to pdfs for our website. I am trying to turn a Quark document (we have both v. 4.1 and 5.0 running on Mac OS 9.1) that has a double page spread, that is, two A4 pages side by side, in to a pdf that shows both pages side by side. As it is, Acrobat Distiller makes a pdf that puts the lef-hand page as the first page and the right page below it. I have asked a couple of our designers but they are not sure how to do it. I am sure that I have seen pdfs that have double page spreads. I appreciate all of your replies but I am still no nearer to doing it. It seems somewhat ridiculous that one has to buy a plug in to achieve a dps, as double page spreads are widely used throughout the publishihg industry.

That can be done from the Quark file. In Quark, go to Window_Show Page Layout. Make sure your pages that you want to print as spreads are side by side in the layout.

Now choose page set-up. Under the "layout" tab, check "spreads". Under the "setup" tab, choose Printer description: Adobe PDF panther, Distiller (or whichever printer description you use to create pdf files), Paper size: custom, Paper width: 16.536 (width of both pages of A4 page), Paper height: automatic, Reduce or enlarge: 100%. Now create the pdf file as you normally do (probably print to file and then run through Distiller).

    Hope this helps.

Actually discovered the simple solution. If your document only contains two pages and you select 'Facing' or 'Continuous Facing', Acrobat places the pages side by side.

Simple test was to create a three page document and choose each option.
    Result: First page on right.
Remove one of these pages and choose each option.
Result: Both pages displayed with first on the left.

Note: There needs to be a change in the 'View=>Page Layout' option before you get the side by side.
