Why isn't it possible to create a PDF file on my Mac G4 OS 9 with Acrobat reader 4.05 installed? The File>Print window does not show the PDF option. Why not?

Because Reader is just that. A Reader.

Creation of PDF's requires the full version of Acrobat.

Well, I downloaded "Install Create Adobe PDF" entitled "Create Adobe PDF for Mac OS 9. Version 4.0" and burned it on a CD-R disk with the G5 OS X. I then installed it on the G4 OS 9. There was no change, No way to create a PDF. Not available with an Elite 608 LC laser printer with Microsoft Office 2001. No PDF option in the printer window. PDF files will read and print, but cannot be created.

    Thanks.

    1. As graffiti said, you need the full paid product.

    2. You may try the telephone. Vising them may also work. But most likely than not, they will charge you for every conversation.

Got a link we can look at? Not familiar with it.

The only "Create Adobe PDF" I'm familiar with is the online version where they create the PDF for you. That wouldn't install a printer and Adobe doesn't have a free PDF creator.

Unless you have a friend that works there, you're out of luck support-wise. Acrobat 4 hasn't been supported since Acrobat 6 was released 4+ years ago

    Thomas,

From the page you linked to:
    > If you own Adobe Acrobat 4.0 for Mac OS and you use AdobePS 8.6 (the Adobe PostScript Printer driver) to print to PostScript devices,
Adobe no longer sells or supports software for Mac OS 9. You can find
a version of ghostscript for OS 9 that will create pdf files. I belive
    it is open source.

I think you will be finding it easier to purchase a new machine than
it will be to keep finding needed software for your old machine. Mac
minis are dirt cheap. There are Window PCs that are even cheaper. You
cannot expect companies to sell and support ancient software, it is
not cost effective. I understand the desire to keep old machines
running, I have several ancient machines for tasks that I need ancient
software for, but for real work, I use a newer machine.

Let's look closely at that page. "Create Adobe PDF enables you to
easily create a PDF file from any application...If you own Adobe
Acrobat 4.0 for Mac OS "

Ok, it seems clear that you do NOT own Acrobat 4.0, since you say
specifically that you have Acrobat Reader instead. This was an add on
for people who had already paid for the software, not a free way of
making PDF for everyone. Acrobat 4.0 was discontinued in 1992, when
    Acrobat 5.0 was released.

If you can find a copy of Acrobat 5.0 for Macintosh to buy, it should
enable you to make PDF files on Mac OS 9.

I believe that the "Create Adobe PDF" feature created a desktop printer for creating PDFs. In the "Additional Notes" section of the page mentioned above is the following comment:

    -----
Create Adobe PDF requires Adobe Acrobat Distiller 4.0, which is part of the Adobe Acrobat 4.0 package. The Adobe Acrobat 4.0 package is not the same as the free Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0. To learn how Acrobat 4.0 is different from Acrobat Reader, see Introduction to Acrobat Reader. To learn more about the Adobe Acrobat 4.0 package, visit the Adobe Web site.
    -----

FWIW - Acrobat 5.0 was released in May of '01.

Mike: My problem is that I created files with obsolete music notation software (MOTU's Mosaic) that can only run on OS 9 or earlier. I can print the files, but a client of mine wants PDF files of this music on a CD for archaival purposes in addition to the usual print copies. (I have been using Sibelius notation software for a year now on an iMac.)

It looks like the best option is to find a copy of the Acrobat 5.0 package, since Adobe no longer supports or sells it. Maybe on eBay.

Well, on eBay, I have a bid of $55.99 on an "original" complete package for Adobe Acrobat 5. I hope I win. I hope it will work.
