Creating Reversed Text Paragraph Styles

Posted: 08-21-2004, 12:53 AM
Is there any way to create a reversed text paragraph style in InDesign 2.0 other than using the paragraph rule approach -- this only works for single lines at a time but I'd like a paragraph style that has a background colour applied for the style no matter how many lines it covers.

Not by paragraph style, but you can put paragraphs into single-cell tables and use the fill of the table as a background.

Dave is correct. An easy way to do this is to select the head up to BUT NOT INCLUDING the final paragraph return. Then select Table > Convert Text to Table.

By default, tabs add columns, and returns add rows. So delete any unnecessary tabs and returns. If necessary, you can merge cells back into a single cell.

--thanks for the suggestions. I am really disappointed that there doesn't seem to be a better solution since the documents I'm working with will have multiple people working on them and I am looking for a way to easily control styles to maintain consistency.

Can't you create one style for a one-line heading (using paragraph rules), one for a 2-line heading, and so on?

Actually, it is easy to create one style for a one or two line heading, then one for two through four lines, etc. Use both an rule above and rule below and take advantage of their willingness to overlap. (Note that you can do a two-line two different ways.)

What about a cusome strikethrough efect? Only useful if the text is right justified. Add a Shift tab at the end of the paragraph.

Good idea, although it needs to be a custom underline. A strikethrough is in front of the text.
