creating transparent PNG...where's the mask?

I finally have the need to export a transparent PNG with a alpha
transparency.

How do I actually create that alpha channel to indicate the transparency?
I'm thinking this is so obvious, but I'm completely lost on this one.

As far as I know, the Alpha channel is exported along with the exported
graphic. No info on where to specify it though. In the Export window it
says Millions+Alpha.

I do know that in Flash MX you have more options to choose from with
PNG's when working them with Fireworks.
