Default Cropping BMP's in Illustrator 10

I am new to illustrator and am working on a project where I need to include a piece of a BMP image. Can I bring the image into AI and crop it to the size/portion I need or do I need another app for the cropping process????

Have a look at "Clipping Masks" in your manual.

Thanks for the info Tim. I have tried that but what I don't understand in how to deal with the frame or outline that is left from the object that was cropped. When I export the image as a jpeg or bmp the image is sized to the frame that is the size of the origional object before it was cropped. I need the image to be smaller than the origional size cropped object.

I normally use Photoshop for editing any raster images, but I do remember reading something about cropping in Illy. Hang around, someone will let you know.

    Mike,

Have a look at "crop marks" in your manual.

Once you have set crop marks on a placed image in Illustrator, exporting to JPG or BMP will yield a new image cropped to those marks.

But I have to agree with Timothy: Photoshop is the application you should be using to manipulate raster images.

Another way to crop linked images:

    * Links Palette Menu: Placement options
    * Preserve pop up menu: Select 'File dimensions'
    * Select the reference point for alignment
    * Enable 'Clip to bounding box'
    * Selection tool: Crop and export your linked images
