cropping pics
when i think of cropping a picture, it means narrowing the output to a smaller
area of the photo. i can't figure out how to crop a picture. i just want to
export a small box of the picture and cut out the periphery. the crop and
output area tools don't seem to do this. what do i use for this?
thanks

Re: cropping pics
The best way to do it in FH is with a clipping path via the "paste inside"
method.
1. Draw a rectangle on top of your to-be-cropped image that represents the
area you wish to have remain visible.
2. Select the image only and go Edit > Cut.
3. Select the rectangle and go Edit > Paste Inside.

Re: cropping pics
Or any old closed shape you want, it doesn't have to be a rectangle.
Bill- I know you know this, just pointing it out for "em's" sake.

Re: cropping pics
Yeah, thanks for adding that info, Rich. I wasn't thinking "outside the box"
(as it were) when I wrote that reply ;-)

Re: cropping pics
I can't believe the Help Menu in F10 does not have this info, I've been trying
to figure out how to crop for an hour. What's with the Crop Xtras and all the
stuff on Paths, etc... sorry just ranting.
My question is, is there a way to pan and recenter the crop once it is in the
box (or other shape..)?
Thx
/Dennis

Re: cropping pics
You don't say so, but it sounds like you're trying to crop a raster image.
Look in your Help files for info on 'clipping paths'.
FreeHand cannot cut away excess pixels in a raster image. You'll need a
raster image editor such as Fireworks or Photoshop to do that.

Re: cropping pics
Don't know about FH10, but in earlier versions you could Opt/Alt click on
the clipped image to select it independent of the clipping path and then
move it "inside" the path. In 10 you might have to use the Subselect pointer
(the hollow arrow).

Re: cropping pics
Thx, I've read the Help and Docs on cropping the raster(TIF) with a path (very
slowly..;-) -- but I'm missing something. The Paste inside works great though
and for me it may be the best option for framing the images.
And the Alt pointer works to move the image in the frame, I was trying too
many alt/option/shift keys and didn't do the obvious....
Thx for the help.

Re: cropping pics
Yes, Macromedia has not hit the ball on the Help pages for cropping, or masking
as Adobe calls it.
I use the "Mask" feature in Adobe a lot, and am trying to get up to speed with
Macromedia's products.
I used bills tip to cut the photo image and use "Edit>Paste Contents" while
the vector shape is selected (MX04.)
This works like a charm.!
Thanks for this post. It cured my headache.
