    Default CS: Can we scale a frame, independent of contents?

    I swear I used to be able to type absolute dimensions for picture frames, so long as the frame was selected with the Direct Select tool. No longer. Now, whenever I change the height of a picture frame, the photo it contains is scaled as well. I am certain that only the frame is selected.

    On the Transform palette menu (or Control palette menu) deselect Transform
    Content

    I don't see that option on the Control palette. It is dimmed on the Transform palette.

    Scott,
    Try it, (on the Transorm Palette menu), with no document open.

    Select a graphic frame, not a text frame, or a frame without content. You're talking about "picture frames," no? Then "Transform Content" is visible and selectable.

    OK, I tried that. A was able to check/uncheck "Transform Content". Didn't help any when I opened a file. A bit like haveing a reverse gear that you can enter only when the key's not in the ignition.

    Visible, yes. Selectable, no. It is dimmed and unchecked. Yet when I enter different width or height (via Control palette), the content scales. I have selected the frame using the direct select tool, and even toggled the Select Content/Select Container buttons in Control palette. Nothing helps.

    OK, I think you're missing when the command applies. This is from the InDesign Help:

    * * *

    When you scale, rotate, or skew a frame, or adjust its width or height using the Transform palette, you can determine whether to transform the frame and its content, or only the frame. When the Transform Content command is selected, any transformation is applied to the frame and its contents. When this command is deselected, the transformation applies only to the frame.

    The Transform Content command does not apply when you scale by dragging, or when you transform using any of the Transform tools. It only applies when you select the frame with the Selection tool and use the Transform or Control palette commands.

    To change the Transform Content setting:

    In the Transform or Control palette menu, do one of the following:
    • Leave Transform Content deselected (the default) if you are using the Transform palette to crop graphics by altering frame size.
    • Choose Transform Content to select it if you are resizing images that use clipping paths, or graphics that are already cropped properly.

    Thank you Steve. I'd kiss you if I weren't so ugly.
