CS Text on an ellipse - WEIRD STUFF!
When I click the text on a path tool on an ellipse, I get all sorts of strange symbols (small boxes attached to lines, etc.). I can figure out how to move the type easily but click on one of the boxes and I go into some bizarre mode I don't understand. Where can you specify centered type on an ellipse? This is not in the book. G4, Panther, 2GB RAM, Illustrator CS

Make sure "type object selection by path only" is UNCHECKED (in the preferences)
Then you'll notice a thin vertical line in the center of the text that you can grab with the arrow tool and slide the text around as before. The box symbol at the end alows you to link additional overflow text into another text box....I think. I'm still baffled by some of it's behaviour.

Kevin - Thanks, I'm glad I'm not the only one baffled by this. I did notice that if you set the lignment to centered in the paragraph palette the type is centered. Upside down, but centered

Re: CS Text on an ellipse - WEIRD STUFF!
If you select the text with the direct select tool and drag the center mark at the top of the mark you will be able to reposition all of the text and drag it to any position on the path. If you drag it across the the path the text will read right-side up. If you want it to be positioned outside the path then offset the baseline with a negative value.
