I have a similar problem with IDCS, but of a slightly different flavor. I use Win2k, and I print to an HP 1050 and HP 5500, using a rip called Zeh. I creat files from scratch, placing text and images on a simple background. (I do not place pdf files in these documents.) In ID2, I could export to PDF, and print the PDF with no problems. However, In IDCS, printing from an exported PDF gives the following error messages in the log file:

%%[ Error: invalidaccess; OffendingCommand: readonly ]%%
    %%[ Key: QQPAWI+ArialMT; Value: CIDFont ]%%
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%ZPS-PS-W-EMPTYOUTPUT, Output contains zero scan lines.
Possible reason: Bad PostScript file or no "showpage" in the file.

As a work-around, I have been able to print the IDCS indd file to "Adobe PDF" as a printer, create a pdf that way (rather than through "export to pdf"), and then print the resulting pdf with no problems. I have also been able to print to a ps file from IDCS, open that in Photshop 7, and save to a pdf that will print. (However, Photoshop CS cannot open this ps file.) I use Acrobat 6.0 regular version. All pdf files show up correctly on the screen; it is trying to print them that I have problems.

I tried the suggestion to place the pdf created in IDCS in ID2, and print that. But I got the same error message.

    Michael,

It's your RIP. It's an older non-Adobe RIP which has not been upgraded.

When you directly export PDF from InDesign, it encodes fonts as double-byte (CID) encoding. You can see this in your error message. This has been part of the specification of PostScript for ten years!

You've already found the workaround--create a PostScript file and use Distiller, or use Adobe PDF printer which also uses Distiller. (I wouldn't recommend the Photoshop method because it reduces the quality of type and vectors.)
