CS2 Colors and Gradients are different from Illustrator 10 - Adobe Illustrator Windows

In upgrading from Illustrator 10 to Illustrator CS2, the colors in my files are noticably different. Even when using standard gradients or PMS Colors everything appears to be much darker and more flat. The computer/monitor and all hardware is exactly the same. I open the files in version 10 to make sure something hasn't been changed and the colors look great but re-open in CS2 and, again, colors are not right. Also, when printing from CS2 colors and gradients print darker. Is it the software or is it a setting that I've overlooked. Please Help....

Morgan, have you checked the colour management?

My monitor is calibrated (Pantone Spyder2) but I guess I'm not sure how to check "colour management". Please advise.

Morgan, if you look through the Help file subjects turning up in a search for 'color management settings', especially Using predefined color management settings; the two versions should have identical settings.

If you are only seeing this change in spot color gradients, you may also be encountering the change detailed in this thread:

    Paul A George, "Murky gradient colour in CS2" #1, 25 May 2005 10:26 am </cgi-bin/webx?13.3bba92c8/0>

To summarize, AI CS changed the way spot color gradients are previewed on screen and printed to CMYK devices to give a more accurate representation of how those gradients would look when really printed as spot color separations. The old way of previewing spot color gradients tended to be brighter than it really looks when overprinting two spot color tints.

If you are not really making spot color separations, and are just using the Pantone libraries as a way to get process color swatches, then you should convert them to Global Process colors instead of Spot Colors, and they will look more like they did in AI 10.

(Color Management settings would affect all colors, not just spot color gradients.)
