CS2 does not create EMF linked graphics in pdf files? - Adobe Indesign Windows

Does anyone know why I am not able to export a pdf from CS2 with EMF links? We use a variety of linked files to create our instruction manuals, all other types of links are fine but EMFs will not show up in the pdf file. Thanks in advance...

Metafiles are not a good choice for a postscript workflow. That said,
select the graphic with the direct select tool and check the attributes
pallete to see if they're set to non-printing.

I will politely disagree with Mr. Levine on whether WMF and EMF files are a good choice or not for a PostScript or PDF workflow. (If you have well-created content in that format, in most cases you are best off to leave it and use it as-is!)

I tried to reproduce the symptom reported. I exported EMF from Adobe Illustrator, placed into InDesign 4, and exported PDF. Worked like a charm without any hitches.

Assuming that you checked out Bob Levine's suggestion to no avail, could you perhaps advise where the EMF files originated? Perhaps e-mail a copy of a file (EMF) that fails to appear in exported PDF from InDesign 4?

I suppose in a perfect world you would be right, Dov. But most metafiles
I've seen are part of 1,000,000 clipart files for $39.00 or MS Office
clipart...which is great for a quick PowerPoint presentation.

I guess it's the same as the old truetype files are no good for
postscript printing. There's nothing inherently wrong with the format,
it's just that there's too much junk out there.

GIGO (garbage in => garbage out).

FWIW, the Microsoft Office Clipart files (in WMF vector format, not the low rez JPEG stuff) are not bad at all, especially compared to the "1,000,000 piece of cr*part for $39.00" collections. I have often gone to offset and/or digital press with them with nary a problem!
