Default CSS file and Assets window question

I'm new to Dreamweaver - just bought DW8 on Mac 10.4 and have a question :

First, I open a .css file. It opens in code view.
My problem is that the Assets window 'greys out' and becomes unusable.
This is a real pain as if I want to change a css colour by choosing a colour
from the 'Site Colour' panel, and if I ever want to do anything in the Assets
window (such as look at a template), I have to switch the main edit window to a
    non-css file.

Is this a design feature, a bug or is there something I'm missing?

Oh, and while I'm confused - why the hell can't a copy the name of an image or
the Hex code of a colour in the Assets window?

    Thanks in advance
