css troubles - Macromedia Dreamweaver

Pardon my ignorance.... I'm really new at this stuff. I'm trying to take some text on my webpage (I didn't create it... someone else did in DMX and I'm just editting it) and turn it into a link. However, everytime I add something to the link property it turns the text WHITE... and since it's on a white background, I can't see the text until I remove the link properties. I know he setup a .links style that was in white, and I think that's why it's doing it. But, he also setup a .bluelinks style that I *should* be ...

Hmm. I should mention. It seems to work if I select text that is ONLY 1 word. But if I try to select say "The blue crow" it turns white even if I have the .bluelink selected in CSS. If I just select "crow", it works... Whats going on?

You could either take away the general link style (the white) and create
a new custom style for the menu and then another for links in the text.
Or you could add the blueLinks style inside the <a> tags as span class
    like this:
    <a href="foo.html" span class="blueLink">Here's a link</a>
I think that'll work but I dunno if that's considered kosher.....

I'm really lost here. If someone wants to contact me offline, feel free. You're talking with a CSS and DMX moron here who's been using it for a whole day now.

If you like to create a new custom style, press F1 for the DW help files.
If you like to test the latter, just make a regular link, then switch to
code view, find the link and add the code I suggested before. Like this:

Link looks for example like this:
    <a href="foo.html">Here's a link</a>

    Then place this inside:
    span class="blueLink"

so that the link finally looks like this:
    <a href="foo.html" span class="blueLink">Here's a link</a>
