CSS: Underlining Table Columns - Macromedia Dynamic HTML

I want to use the border-bottom property to create an underline for table columns. The complexity comes in when I try to create colspanned "parent" or "super-columns" i.e. column heads that span 2 or more sub/child-columns heads. I need the underline to stop a few pixels short of the next column so the user can see what child-columns are included in the parent. When I tried to add white borders to the left and right it worked too good, in that not only did it create space at the bottom, it also created space at the top (or the bottom ...

    Default CSS: Underlining Table Columns

I want to use the border-bottom property to create an underline for table
columns. The complexity comes in when I try to create colspanned "parent" or
"super-columns" i.e. column heads that span 2 or more sub/child-columns heads.
I need the underline to stop a few pixels short of the next column so the user
can see what child-columns are included in the parent. When I tried to add
white borders to the left and right it worked too good, in that not only did it
create space at the bottom, it also created space at the top (or the bottom of
the one above). In essence the vertical borders sit on top of the horizontal.
Can anybody make sense of what I just said? Any ideas how to (elegantly) get
    what I want?

    Thanks.

I want a "gap" between Wide Column 1 and Wide Column 2 (which span 2 cols
each). Very Wide Column should have no gap. The gap between Columns 1-4 is ok.
What I've done most recently has created a gap in the body rows as well which I
    do NOT want.

Well this was easy enough. I just added the border-collapse attrib and set it
to "separate" and now the left and right (white) borders don't cut into the
bottom border for the cell above.
