    Default custom font display problem

    Hello all,
I use a custom true-type font to write text in an Indian langauge.
Basically, each letter is mapped to an English letter and an English
keyboard is used to generate text. When text thus generated is pasted
onto InDesign type tool boxes, the native character mapped to single
quote (') key is displayed as a pink rectangle. Other letters are
    displayed just fine.

How could I get around this problem? The font was created by using
    Fontographer 4.1.

    Thanks
    Thomas.

Default Re: custom font display problem

Sounds very technical, but isn't :P
InDesign has the option to apply "typographer's quotes" on typing and
importing text. This option (somewhere in the Preferences dialog) is usually
switched to On, so every single and double quote (' and ") are converted to
so-called "curly-quotes", according to some system the left- or right ones.
So if you type a straight single quote char it gets re-mapped to either the
left or the right curly quote. Now you can do either of three things: (1)
dirty: using your font editing program, copy the character you want to use
on position 39 (the single straight quote) to both positions 145 and 146
(the standard Windows font positions for curly singles), so if the character
is re-mapped, it will stay the same on-screen; (2) quick: de-select the
option "use typographers quotes" in the Preferences if you are typing next
text (you should enable it again if you revert back to English), or when
importing text, select "show import options" and de-select the option "use
typographers quotes" in the import dialog; (3) fancy and politically
correct! Check if your Indian language is supported by the Unicode
consortium. If so, you should map the new glyphs using your font editing
program not to standard ascii characters, but to their correct Unicode
    positions.
