Default Cutting out part of object

Hi. I'm an Illustrator beginner. I need to know how to cut out part of an object to make the background come through. I'm making a design for a cd label so I want to have a base color, and I want text to be cut out of it so that the silver of the cd creates the letters. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try looking in the Illustrator Help under "Compound Path" or Masking.

In a new document, set your type. On TOP of this type, draw the size and shape object that will contain your base color and fill it with that color. Select All (that's both base color object and type). In the Pathfinder palette, click the right-most button on the top row of buttons.

If you simply just want the type to be the CD silver, meaning the type is knock-out of your base color, so the actual CD is the color of the type, all you have to do is color the type white and when a film is output the type will be knock-out of the base color. When using object and types colored white just means no color is printed so the color of the material shows through, be it of paper, plastic, or CD. I hope that is clear.
