    Default D-day next week!

    Look out friends,

I'm having a week from hell (and I think I have to work Saturday too).

So I hear some of us are changing to OSX next week, including me.

I'm not so scared anymore with all the extra research I've done from here and there. But, they want to do this when we're behind of all times? Crazy! But I'm not going to hinder it any longer.

My supervisor is still running OS8.6) But he just bought a computer with Panther for home and another woman in his department just got one. So I guess they decided if they could print, we shouldn't have a problem. They only design, and do not need to go to neg.)

But, at the same time the one that got the new computer also had system X at home and it still took her a couple of weeks to get used to it at work. As a matter of fact, we were in a conflict today about which font manager to get. I've been saying for weeks we need Font Agent Pro, but she wanted Font Reserve. Only because she knew it would work in Classic.

Sorry, I guess I want to talk about my day. As I ramble on........

I finally got a hold of the Insider people that make or sell FAP and they said it would work in Classic also. So, I printed out all the information on the website, and talked the other girl into downloading the free trial. She decided it was cool, but still skepical. So hopefully we order it.

So, just a warning, folks. You think I'm delirious now, wait 'till next week!!!!!

By the way, it doesn't matter how bad a day you've had....

Go home to your dog, it always makes you feel better!!!

Dont' do it. If you're already behind on work. Wait. Or at the very least, only update a couple machines.

OSX runs really well, but dealing with a learning curve of a new OS in conjunction with a busy workload will only result in errors.

Yeah, like I have any say in the matter.

Scott, it is just a couple of machines. But it's my machine.

I'm sure I'll get through it though.

What we've noticed is that Illustrator CS actually runs slower in OSX than Illustrator 9 in OS 9 emulated on the same machine. A file we're working on has a bunch of complex gradients, and when zooming in CS, it takes approximately 30 seconds for a screen refresh. On the same machine, in OS 9, Illustrator 9 it refreshes in less than 5 seconds. This is on a G4 1Ghz, with 1.25GB ram. This is my partners machine here at work. I'm on a G4 867, OS 9 1.12 GB ram - Illustrator 9 - and it's smooth sailing...really fast. His is kind of the test machine.

Dee, where I work we're getting OS X also, but we'll install it on an External HD only, and we'll booth from it when somebody gives us an Illy CS or Quark 6 file; other than that, for the daily work, we'll still work in OS 9.1 from the G4 itself.

Install it on an External, do you think your boss will see a difference?

If he sees you working on OS 9, tell him you had to do this job in "Classic" because it crashed OS X.

Scott Roberts that has not been my experience. Are you certain that you have a good maintenance routine for your OS X boot.

And are you certain that you don't have a conflicting software?

It would appear that something is wrong with your OS X boot have you emptied your cache files for the web browser and the system.

I don't thin that zoom should even take a second.

I really think I'll be O.K. I've been preparing myself for months by following every thread in this forum. And I'm more confident now, even with the idea of OSX.

Plus I know my new friends here will try and help me out.

    Thanx for the empathy though.

Dee, you've helped me along on many of my ai forum questions so I will keep my fingers crossed for you. If things drift into the wrong direction for a moment, just be thankful they didn't say they were aiming you towards a Windows environment!!! Then you know you would be looking for the next bag-boy position at the grocery store!! (no offense to any bag-boys reading this)

I just can't imagine any sort of prudent scenario where a company would jump production Macs to OS X without thoroughly testing out established in-house workflow procedures on a single machine first. Look before you leap is a good policy here. And haven't you mantioned, Dee, that your IT staff isn't real swift on Macs in general? I'd be a wee bit anxious about the next 2 or 3 months if I were you.

OS X has been brilliant for me, and I had very little trouble making the switch. But then, It's just me, a few machines (only one is critical) and a simple Airport network. One scanner and one printer. No RIPs. No external network servers. And I do all my own troubleshooting, naturally. And my head is thoroughly wrapped around the way Apple does things.

I wish you nothing but luck and blue skies.

Keep us apprised of how the transition goes. Tell us about both the triumphs and the tragedies. Perhaps the Photoshop Lounge would be a good place for ongoing musings about it (since it's kind of off-topic?).

Well, the girl in the artroom got hers last week and I guess proved that she can go to the RIPs. So now it's like, come on let's try this! That's just how our company works. It's only going to be 3 machines anyways. There's 12 of us here in prepress, although we are still a bit understaffed.

    Yeah, this should be fun.
