D100 or 300D - Photography

Similar but different obviously: I have some basic Nikon Glass (35-70 Stock Nikor), no Canon Glass US$1000 for a new 300D Kit (with lens) (AU$1600-$1700ish) US$1300 for an ex demo body "Mint Condition" (AU$2000-2100ish) Forget the Canon vs Nikon, I know the Nikon is a little noisier in long exposures, but the D100 isn't a crippled model either. The Canon's lens is more flexible given FLM, (effectively 28-100 vs my Nikon lens which would be about 50-105) Either are a lot of money to me at the moment. Guy...

Go to www.dpreview.com and do a complete comparison of the 2 cameras to
decide what you features each have compared to what features you want.

    My opinion = D100

I've read the reviews, but that doesn't give you a hands on as some of you
out there might have. I am no in a position to check them out myself either
(physically) as during most working hours etc I have a 2 year old around my
    ankles.

I'm leaning the way of the D100. Its multifunction grip, although expensive
does add more (like AA support), and I might be able to get that upgrade
    early next year as well.

I'm so dam close to pressing that BUY button. It will be great news for
others if I do though, it will mean a lot of new models will be released
    shortly after...

you would have to be nuts to buy the 300D from the US for a saving of only a
couple of hundred bucks. it's gotta be like 30 or 40% off to make it
    worthwhile IMO

remember you could very well be slugged with several hundred dollars in
shipping/ GST/ customs processing fees. you may pay *more* than local!

What do you want to do with your gear? normal snap2 ? or serious stuff ?

IMO ... Canon is the way digital photography is going.
if you do film , Nikon can be your choice. [I am a Nikon person btw :) ]

Reason is ... Nikon don't update their gears as fast as Canon [ for now ]
    and
in digital world ... technology is the thing that matters.
[ who still uses Pentium 2 for day to day graphic editing .. I am curious
    :) ]

I saw a mint, still under warranty D60 went for AUD 1300 last week.
I was itching to buy it ... but thinking of the optics I need to reinvest ..
    hmm .. maybe later :D

At $2999 in Australia (12 months interest free if you go to Domayne) there
has never been such as time to buy a D100 ..

Nikon = good, Canon = evil nasty baby killers

I can't see anything that would support that statement at all.

Again I don't see that as accurate. The 10D which is their latest release
is NOT superior to the D100 which has been out a lot longer. The 300D is
most definitely not an improvement on the 10D other than price ... ....
I think the rapid release of cameras has nothing to do with improved quality
and everything to do with a desire to profit from the Jonses.

Really? and yet our Fuji S1 is still being used for front cover shots....

I picked up my D100 for about $2890 from Vanbar in Melbourne, then take the
$200 cash back off and the price is prettier still.

which is why I think the $2000 for the imported D100 is a great buy

lets face it, after 12 months your out of warranty anyway and the fact its
    an import is irrelevant.

as my company will actually buy it, I get the GST back either way. Its all
    relative.

I can buy it local for $1999 at most places, its pretty hard to get a better
deal with anyone who has stock, or US$999 + freight/GST = about $1650 and
have it in about a week. That includes customs fees ($50) and GST.

For about the same price, I could get the base grip, UV filter and 3 extra
batteries (2 sets for the base).

As a 'Canon EOS Guy'(tm) I reckon the D100 would offer you more in terms of
    feature set than the 300D.

IMO the image quality on the 300D might be better, particularly High ISO or
longer shutter speeds, decide whether either of these are important to you.
I rate the spot meter of the D100 and the +/-5 EV exposure comp amoungst a
few other bits. The maximum continuous frames in RAW on the D100 is fairly
poor at 3-4, but its similar to the 300D in that respect.

Not really important is it, being a software crippled 10D. I mean you get
everthing they say it'll do. Better to have a more economical version
available than have what the 'other guys' have to offer in the sub $2K
    space.

    Nikon

And getting a wide angle lens for the D100 won't necessarily be that cheap
.... if you are used to ~28mm and use it a bit you'll be crippled by the huge
difference it makes. That was the biggest disappointment I had when I first
    got my D30 .... where'd my wide angle go ?? :-(.

I hear ya, I hear ya. If it makes you feel any better the lenses (Nikon or
Canon) will keep you that way for a while to come.

Gosh, thats an easy one. If you were comparing a 10D vs D100 it becomes more
interesting, but no contest over the 300D.

    The D100 is ;

    - Built better than 300d
    - Instant power on, and always ready to shoot.
    - Better AF and particularly so in low light
    - 7 jpeg buffer (4 raw though)
    - Spot meter
    - +/- 5 EV
    - Much better raw software

The 300d will have less noise - but thats not to say the D100 is a noisy
camera. It's just that the canon sensor is very very very low on noise. It's
more something that you notice on a 100-200% zoom in photoshop than on a
    print or web image.

Yes the 300d will be better on long exposures, but the D100 will easily do
1min with very nice results with the NR custom function turned on. Most
people don't need more than 15-30secs where there will be next to no
    difference.

The grip is good value to have.

That grip translates to $250 USD = $350 AUD which you may consider from
the states and still rising :) HK will be cheaper also.

With 2 batteries in the grip you may never need to use the AA pack. I've
had over 1500 frames and still power to go. Can't see you using that
    many frames in a day.

There are lots of cheap S/H nikon bottle around the place, if one wants
to look - 24-120 (36-180) is a good general range for the D100. Nikon
make better wide angle lenses than Canon. Canon's R&D goes into long lenses.

The D100 has been around ~15mths now and still performs against Canon's
    newer models.

Will Nikon release an update early next year maybe so but I do think the
Nikon D100 is still good value so does Nikon for today's digital camera.

well bugger me if another 3 ex demos didn't appear overnight, so this time I
    jumped in and ordered one

Anyone interested in a US D100 for US$1300 see

    http://www.stores.ebay.com/id=27280321&ssPageName=L2

I'd be surprised if they have this many ex demos, so I can only hope that it
is their way of selling below the $1500 Nikon seem to dictate to dealers as
min sell price. As soon as I ordered one another appeared on their
    listing...

Now I am just keen to get my hands on it, change the plug to AUS for the
    charger and start taking photos!

    Cheers all
