Why did you need to download Nikon software? Photoshop 7 reads them just fine

All I have is Photoshop LE, so I have no way of seeing the RAW images
without the Nikon software. Eventually I'll get the latest version of
Photoshop, but I'm pretty amazed at what I can do now with the limited
resources I've got. I can punch things up a bit with Nikon View, then go
into LE and tweak it even more. Up to today I was limited to only shooting
JPEG images never realizing what the difference was between shooting jpg and
    raw..

There's a photoshop filter in there somewhere, something.8bf or maybe .9bf,
can't remember exactly now. You copy that into your photoshop directory, under
    'automation' I think...

I can't remember the exact details, I'll take a look at my home system if you
    like.

If you then right click a NEF file, and select open with photoshop, the
converter fires up, offering you exposure compensation and white balance
    adjustments.

I just tried it. It appears that LE is not compatible with the Nikon
software. I do have a copy of Photoshop 5, never loaded it, but once the
image is changed to a jpeg or tiff I can pull it into LE and work with it.

"So far" I'm quite pleased with the NV software (recommended over what came
with the camera), and LE has more bells and whistles than I really need
right now. I realize that sooner than later I'll probably want to combine
images using layers, and more, but right now I'm just experimenting to see
how far I can go with this camera.

Another thing: Shooting in RAW s the life out of your memory cards, and
I can do a lot of tweaking with jpegs and and LE. It's just a matter of
figuring out what tools to use. I'd like to put together some stock photos
for local magazines, so I'd like to keep the workflow as simple as possible,
and be able to shoot a lot of photos without spending a fortune on memory
    cards.

The D70 makes it so easy to get to RAW it seems you've got plenty of time to
switch when you see that one in a million shot.
