Default Data Merge SQL Server/MS Access

Hopefully, I can explain in a concise paragraph. We are a County Department that has utilized SQL Server Database to collect our data through the Web. We used MS Access as an application with VBA to publish our Budget in MS Word Templates. This past year, it was very difficult because the generation of hundreds of MS Word documents for every revision. This was a nightmare.

We are in the process of purchasing Adobe InDesign. We would like to know if purchasing this product will allow our department to better control the generation of only 22 Departments files of program information and budget data as opposed to 180 files. I noticed that the product offers data merge. Currently, we have various databases that contain key fields that ties the data together. For one department, we would set up a multiple pages in one template. In this example, the department would have a total of 10 programs plus 10 budget data sheets. Some departments may have more programs but the templates will be control within one file.

My question is can these fields be mapped to the specific templates? Can edits be done to the data on this template and it will be replicated on the SQL Server? Or is there another solution with this product?

I have successfully used the Data Merge feature with Indesign and it was a HUGE help. You have to export your data to a tab or comma delimited file before you can import into InDesign - so there's that extra step - but it works well.
