Default Data Source Connection Problems -- CF6 and CF7

We have doing development locally running CF6 on a local XP SP2 machine with
the latest version of the MS MSDE server. When we installed CF6 last year, we
had many problems establishing a connection from CF to MSDE. We could not get
the Microsoft SQL driver to work and eventually got an ODBC socket to work.

We have just installed CF7 on our local server and the ODBC socket was quirky
to get working and once we did we found nText fields in our MSDE database were
entirely truncated no matter whether CLOB was checked in the data source set up
or not.

So we again tried the Microsoft SQL driver but just could not get it to
function as a trusted source or with a userID/password (our MSDE install is set
up to accept both). After two days of frustration we found this thread:
http://www.dbforums.com/showthread.php?t=976301&page=2&pp=15

indicating that in the registry the
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/MSSQLServer/MSSQLServer/SuperSocketNetLib/Tcp/TcpPort

may be blank. We found it was and set it to 1433, rebooted and got the
Microsoft SQL driver to work either with a password or as a trusted source.

Now we tried the Microsoft SQL driver in CF6 (which is still installed) and it
worked just fine.

Hope this helps someone else with connection problems on a local MSDE or MSSQL
install. Since the MSDE was installed on a new computer just six months ago
maybe Microsoft removes it as security measure.
