database driven website using SAN
We want to develop database driven website. because of enormous amount
of data (300GB)
customers's tech advisor is insisting on using SAN instead of direct
attached storage method.
I want to know what issues need to be considered while using SAN in
web solutions.? Which database
server/ product is best suited for such kind of job ? Can anyone
suggests
good informative articles on this subject , available on web.
Thanks in advance

The high level of indirection between the logical Informix chunk/Oracle
tablespace etc and the actual physical (hyper)volume upon which that disk
area will reside means that traditional disk placement techniques cannot
easily be carried out. On the other hand, such is the peformance,
particularly with fibre connectivity, large caches etc, that it's not
necessary.
Well, Informix and Oracle work fine with SAN technology in my expereince.> Which database

If sufficient money is spent on the SAN infrastructure, excellent backup and
recovery times can be using external restores. There a couple of white
papers on database and SAN, and SAN and backup and recovery, on our website
at www.ardenta.com (you'll have to register). For more general papers have
a search of EMC's site www.emc.com: down the years they've produced papers
on intergartion with most of the major DBMSs, and many of the principles are
applicable to other SAN vendors.

Check out James Morle's Sane SAN paper at www.oaktable.net
My observations. SAN adds complexity to the storage layer switches, caches,
volume managers etc and it also abstracts physical storage (often
completely) from the DBA, my SYSADMIN is suggesting that in future instead
of specifying disks we should just ask for xGB storage. This is an
unresolved debate. When you add complexity at least initially you increase
rather than decrease the likelihood of failure (multiple redundancy and
smart software notwithstanding)
