Default db connection

Hi there,

I have recently bought a notebook and installed W2K Server on it.
I am trying to run an ASP site but I'm having some difficulties connecting
to the database.

I've created a virtual site and tryed to run an ASP page and it works, that
means IIS is running and configured properly, the problem is when when I try
to connect to the Access XP DB, I always get the following error on the
browser:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Error Type:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers (0x80004005)
[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver]General error Unable to open
registry key 'Temporary (volatile) Jet DSN for process 0x5c4 Thread 0x5a8
DBC 0x227d024 Jet'.
/igfse/LP/index.asp, line 13
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

- I've checked the connection string path, it is correct and it is the
following:
"DRIVER={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};DBQ=C:\\Documents and
Settings\\Administrator\\My
Documents\\Projectos\\IGFSE\\www\\bd\\igfse_bd.mdb ";
- I've assigned permissions to the user IUSR_Machine
- I have installed the latest MDAC

When I try with a DSN the error returned by the browser is:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Error Type:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers (0x80004005)
[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Disk or network error.
/igfse/LP/index.asp, line 13
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

What's happening? Does anybody have a clue?

Thanx in advance.

This error is caused by a permissions problem. You could go read about it
here:
http://www.aspfaq.com/show.asp?id=2154
and try to correct it, or you could do the easy thing and switch to using
the native Jet OLEDB provider in your connection string. See
www.connectionstrings.com. You do need to make sure the IUSR account has
Change permissions on the folder containing the mdb file. Do not assume IUSR
is in the Everyone group.

1. Why do you have double backslashes in your connection string? it should
be (all on one line):

"Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=C:\Documents and
Settings\Administrator\My Documents\Projectos\IGFSE\\www\bd\igfse_bd.mdb"

2. Have you granted Change permission for the C:\Documents and
Settings\Administrator\My Documents\Projectos\IGFSE\\www\bd folder to the
IUSR account.

3. What does "not working" mean?

This string is assigned to a variable using JScript code, that's why I use
double backslashes. The annoying thing is that I'm doing exactly what I
usually do. It works on my machine but not on my laptop (both have w2k
server) with all the SP and updates, and .NET Framework installed
(irrelevant for this issue).

It means I got the same error I have reported before! I'll post some code if
you want (but not today)...

That's not possible. You were reporting an ODBC error yesterday. You are no
longer using ODBC. You MUST be getting a different error message...
Specifically, you can no longer be getting that " ... Registry key ... "
error: that is specifically an ODBC issue.

This is almost certainly a Permissions issue, although there are some
exceptions which can be found by reading Aaron's aspfaq article and going to
the pages he links to in his article.

you're right, it's not exactly the same error, but it's a similar one (don't
have the machine here)!
I have already read several articles regarding permission issues. I have
checked and tryed all of them. Permissions to full of IUSR_machine account
for <TEMP> dir, the web site root, the web site DB dir, the DB file, the
registry ODBC entry, nothing worked. That's why I'm starting to believe that
maybe IIS is damaged and I should try to reinstall it!

thanx again!
