DB in remote server
Hi,
I created an asp page, which inserts a record into a table in Microsoft
Access. I tried it using 2 methods:
1) Running on my local computer -
Created a DSN on my computer and used this to establish a connection to the DB
which is also on my local computer. I setup the DB connection with local
server connection. The testing server (IIS) is also local. This method worked
fine and I was able to insert the record.
2) Transferred the DB file and asp page to a remote server. Tried to update db
from ASP page, but was unable to.
Does anyone know how to go about setting up a database connection using a
remote web server and storing the db file in the same location, so anyone can
update the database using the asp page viewable from the internet.
Thanks,
Sarb

you created on your local server (most hosts give you the ability to do this
in your Control Panel, but if not, your server administrator would have to
do this for you) or create a Custom Connection String to link the remote
copy of the Access database to the remote site. There are examples of such
connection string available here:

While that is a pay site, the article linked is free.
You will also have to set the permissions on the remote copy of the database
so anyone can write to it.

Re: DB in remote server
thanks for your help. MY web server does not allow me to create a DSN for some
reason, so I've been trying to create a custom connection string for hours but
cannot seem to do so successfully. Could you please give me an indication of
what would be in the string if I'm using Microsoft Access Driver, the name of
my database is bugdb.mdb and the server absolute path is
<%=Server.MapPath("youraccountname")%>
I'm using macromedia dreamweaver's custom connection string dialog to do this.
Your help is much appreciated,
Sarb.
