Hi. Recently, one of our servers went down. We have a backup of the partition, but didn't do a MySql dump. Is there anyway to recover the data? Thanks....

if you have a backup of the data directory, you may not need a mysql
dump! you can potentially move the data directory to a new install. let
me know if you have access to the data directory and to your my.cnf file.

I have the data directory, but don't see any my.cnf. What does it do?

well the my.cnf used to have your configuration settings in it. usually
it can be found under /etc however it is not critical to have that same
    file.

alright, since you have the data directory, here's what you can do:
install a new version of the server on your machine
make sure everything works: login and do a select on any one table
    stop the server
at the cmd line note the permission on the data directoy
then move the data directory of the new version to a safe place say
    under /home/username
then move the old data directory in its place
make sure the permissions are exactly similar to the original data directory
start the server and you should be able to login with your old credentials
