if it's just for ordinary file backup, you could use sth like:

    tar -cvf - /home | rsh remotenode dd of=/dev/rmt0

why not dynamicaly remove DDS drive from the LPAR(x) allocate it to second
LPAR(y)...? I do it with CDROM (on Regatta 7040-671) (which is shared
between LPARs) and it works perfectly - no system restarts required...

The O/P is running AIX 5.1 and to quote from the partioning redbook
"Starting from AIX 5L Version 5.2, AIX supports dynamic logical
partitioning (DLPAR). DLPAR is a function to allow a partition whose
resources are dynamically added and removed without requiring a
    partition reboot."

Are you using 5.1 or 5.2?

    Thanks all for help.
I've just sent it to our outsourcing company to calculate the
cost/problems of OS upgrade with SAP+Informix on it.
We recently changed to IBM machines. All company works on HP and thats
the problem with knowing AIX enviroment.
