Debian 3.0/1 "woody" install - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

Debian installs perfectly on my 2nd. disk-drive, 60gig. I have the following partitions: Boot - 100meg; Swap - 1000meg; remainder is allocated to linux extension2. The problem: I tell it to install the "minimal" programs to make this a functioning system. (I do want the graphical interface - gnome and kde.) However, after it boots up, and beeing presented with the promt, I can't seem to get one of the above mentioned desktops. startx will give me a error. What am I doing wrong?...

You are not supplying sufficient information. Probably your Xfree is not
configured properly. Check if it is installed correctly:

    apt-get install x-window-system-core

    Reconfigure it:

    dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

Make sure your card is supported in Woody's XFree 4.1 (e.g. GeForce 4
cards are not supported by that version's nv driver, so in that case
you have to install the driver from nvidia.com, use the vesa driver or
    upgrade Xfree).

If you need further help, post the exact error message, what card you
are using and the device and screen sections of your Xfree
    configuration file.

Once X works, use tasksel, dselect, apt-get, aptutide or synaptic to
install KDE or Gnome if it is not installed already.

    best regards
