    Default Debian Configuration Questions

    My system:
    1600 Athlon
    512 DDR
    20GB Windows boot
    40GB Windows programs
    36GB Debian
    Sondblaster Live 5.1
    Samsung CD\RW-DVD

I am totally new to Debian and inexperienced with Mandrake and Redhat.

I get the following error message when logging into Debian:

    error while initializing sound driver.
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No Such Device).

    Please help.

And is there a way to load LILO or GRUB onto the Wiindows Boot Drive rather
than using a boot floppy to boot to Debian?

    Appreciation in advance,
    Kevin Swanson

Well, load a driver for it then. Whassa problem? SOunds like you want
an enu10k driver, or near relative.

Eh? What do you mean by "is there a way"? And "windows boot drive"?
You normally put lilo or grub on the MBR. Go ahead! Is there a way to
    get you to do that?

THis sounds like soundcard problem. I have always used sndconfig.
sndconfig is available as part of debian distro so...
just 'apt-get install sndconfig' (if you don't already have it
installed) and run it (as root)

you may need to adjust ownership of the sound device for regular users
so that non-root users can have sound.

I haven't had any luck with dual booting *without* a boot floppy. I
read that it can't be done (easily) with debian if it is installed on a
second hard drive. Since I started using linux as a server, I haven't
had to boot into windows for a loooooooong time for this box. As a
result, I haven't really looked very deeply into it.

    Hello

You need to load the driver for your card (which probably is emu10k1).
However, if you installed using the default kernel (2.2.20-idepci), it
is possible that it doesn't have support for you card. Try

    modprobe emu10k1

To load it automatically, either add a line

    emu10k1

to /etc/modules or add a line

    alias sound-slot-0 emu10k1

to /etc/modutils/aliases or a new file in /etc/modutils and run
    update-modules.

If the driver cannot be found, you can install another kernel image
    using apt-get,e.g.

    apt-get install kernel-image-2.2.20

To use sound, you also must be member of the audio group, otherwise the
next error you get will be "permission denied".

Yes, you can for example tell lilo or grub to install into the master
boot record of you windows disk. If you use lilo, edit you lilo.conf
and look for the line beginning with

    boot=

and set it to your Windows drive (probably /dev/hda). Then rerun lilo.
If you install lilo in the mbr of your windows disk, you will probably
also want to configure it to load your Windows system, so you maybe
want to add a section for windows to your lilo configuration:

    other=/dev/hda1
    label=Windows

(if your Windows system is on the first primary partition on hda)
