    Default Decorative Text Separators

I'm thrilled with the decorative type seperators found in my brushes library. God I'm thrilled (&I'M 66)!!!! but how do you get one of the damn things into your text? So far all I got is a restart.

One of two ways: Brushes follow paths, so Convert Text to Outlines and click your Brush. Or, to use the Brush as a text separator, just make a non-text path between the two text sections you'd like to "split" and use the brush on that path.

Thanks. I can't remember the name, but there is a writing style that uses pictures every few words and I"m hoping to do some of that. I think I'm in love.

    Carl:

Just to expand on Mr. Hill's symbols suggestion, you might want to look into Adobe's Caravan font family or Mini Pics which can be found at <http://www.eyewire.com>. There are many others as well. And since they are fonts, you won't be restricted to Illustrator. Happy creating to you!

I understand there's a way to make fonts in Photoshop. Would those work in Illustrator?

There isn't. Who told you that?

Don't remember. But, I do believe I read it somewhere. But if you can assign a script or action to a key, why could that key not call up a desingated image? A hieroglyph say? Or even a font outlined previously filled with a certain image?

That wouldn't be a font even if it were possible - it would be a series of
images of individual glyphs, each in a different file, unscaleable and
un-editable in the way that text is.

O.K. I may have to resort to Font Foundry or some such but I'm curious--years & years ago, Wordperfect had a Font Program that I believe allowed you to make your own fonts. I wasn't interested at the time. WP still allows you to reassign character keys, so I'm wondering just how much of a hassle it would be to allow Illustrator users to do the same. Perhaps script assigned symbols wouldn't be scalable in the way fonts are, but what the hey. It's still worth doing. I believe.

    Carl,

Fonts and their stability requirements have come a long way since early days, especially with scalable fonts and particularly when using them in Illustrator. I'd recommend using above techniques rather than trying to create your own, but to each their own.

I'll take your word for that. I still think you should be able to substitute a symbol of the approximate dimension for the letter. Adobe can do it, why can't we?

    Carl,

You can, but don't call it a font. Just place your symbol where you wish it and leave a space for it in your text. To keep it with text, just GROUP it with the text.
