I'm having this problem with two files. I can't even delete some of the default swatches. There are a bunch of default swatches with global in the name, ie global black, global yellow and so on. I can't delete those colors and any spot colors I've added myself. When I try Illustrator CS crashes.

I was just playing with the colors palette and the problem seems to be with the "Global" checkbox when you double click a swatch to edit it. If I uncheck it Illustrator crashes.

If I open the Default_CMYK file located here:
    hard drive:Applications:Adobe Illustrator CS:Presets.localized:Swatches.localized:Default_CM YK
I can edit those swatches with no problem and save the file. A little OT but If I delete swatches from that file and save shouldn't all new files only have those swatches? If so that isn't happening. New files have the default swatches, gradients and patterns in the swatch palette.

Mordy would you like me to email these files to you?

I thought that too so I wiped all Adobe files from my drive and reinstalled but I still have the same problem.

No, if you modify the contents of the Adobe Illustrator Startup_CMYK file inside the Plug-ins folder (not in Presets) and save it and restart, then all new CMYK files should have the modified startup palettes.

Default_CMYK, Default_RGB, etc. are what you can load as a Swatch Library palette by going to the Swatch Libraries menu. It is mainly meant for people to be able to easily access the Adobe-provided default swatches if they happen to be working in a document that was not defined to contain the default swatches, but they want to use some of the default ones. The contents of the Swatches, Brushes, Graphic Styles and Symbols folders inside the Presets folder are ignored except for building the corresponding Library submenus. They have no affect on new blank documents at all.

Aaah, thanks. That worked. FWIW, I was able to delete swatches from the Adobe Illustrator Startup_CMYK file with no problem.

Interestingly, after I edited the default color files I copied the data from my files that have the corrupt swatch palette an pasted into a new file but illustrator still crashes when I try and delete a swatch BUT if I copy over individual elements from the "bad" file I can remove swatches.
Also, if I save the files as Illustrator 10 or below and open them back in CS I can delete swatches with no crashing but the type blocks get all screwed up so that's not a great solution.
