Preferences keep deleting
They don't want to be with you and would rather delete than stay? Or maybe they're afraid of commitment. -

You load XP as upgrade on top of 98?
All kinds of odd things can happen if that's the case.

Thanks Yrbkmgr - PS7 was opening as soon as I single clicked the icon, but I followed your advice and the dialog box popped up. I've fixed it now. Works well, touch wood.
To Mac: no I have two networked computers - one is 98 the other xp. I just reinstalled PS7 and updated to 7.0.1 and see again that it still says in the system info that I'm working on win 98?? Strange.
