Designer w/little or no coding exp. Want to learn flex.Possible?
Hey guys, I'm a front end designer working on a team filled with flex coders.
I'd like to be able to get in and get my hands dirty and help. I have some
minor Flash skills and can do basic web design with Dreamweaver. Is it in any
way realistic to expect that I could learn Flex, or would I need several
pre-requisite courses/learnings?
If you have any suggestions for Flex 3 learning resources, that would be
particularly helpful. Thanks.

Re: Designer w/little or no coding exp. Want to learnflex. Possible?
There are numerous learning tools free on the web.
http://blog.flexexamples.com/ is a great resource. The flex documentation is
also very useful and contains some great examples. Another thing you can check
out is http://examples.adobe.com/flex3/componentexplorer/explorer.html. If all
of that still seems too much, get a book that teaches step-by-step. There are a
million ways to learn, you just have to find the one that works best for you.
In my opinion, flex is much easier to learn than flash. I consider it about
equal to html.

There are good online turorials, about two weeks going through some of those
wtih a good degree of focus, while continuing to monitor what the developers
are doing, you can probably begin to understand enough to begin to contribute
something.

Thanks 504, digging in to some tutorials on the train home tonight. One of the devs here says it's about as hard as HTML. That sounds optimistic, but if true, no worries at all on my end.

Re: Designer w/little or no coding exp. Want to learnflex. Possible?
I'm a developer in another language which is completely different. I had to
figure out how to write a couple of fairly complex apps or programs in a few
weeks, with help from the tutorials on the Adobe site, from people on this
forum and some others, and a few books I found, I was able to get them finished
and deployed to clients. I don't think it's very complex, there are some
subtleties and a few gotchas like any language, but to me it's pretty
intuitive, does a lot on it's own and is simpler than C or VB or javascript.
The most important thing is understanding the paradigms, MXML vs. Actionscript
etc. Start simple and work toward more complex, you should have no problem.
