    Default Desktop Search?

    Hi,

for Windows there are many Desktop search engines available. I'm not sure if
something similar exists for Linux. Of course, if I just want to search in text
files, I can use tools like grep and stuff. But I also have a lot of PDFs I
want to search in. Is there anything I can use for this purpose?

Try beagle. Should be in standard ubuntu sources. It is graphical, you
shold read on the project page for some info how to make it a bit faster
(it is not that slow but can be faster)

Mmmh, I tested this now but there are some problems. One is that if I receive a
new mail, mutt does not recognise anymore this new mail, because beagle
accesses the file first. Maybe this is fixed in a later version. I guess I will
try again with the next Ubuntu release, maybe also a newer version of beagle is
    provided.

Any other ideas for Desktop search?

apt-cache search full text search desktop
    finds doodle and kat

    apt-cache search full text search
finds some more, offen web based (so you need a local apache)

Kat looks promising, but it doesn't seem to be very stable in the current
    version.

Yeah, it was installed with Mandriva 2006. Most, if not all users had
to uninstall it as it caused KDE to be unstable.
