Default Desperate Looking for newly installed Win2k3 Ent Corp ASR disk

Hi,

I have tried every resources trying to get my win2k3 Ent Corp server back
from crashing to no avail. Unfortunately, I have lost the ASR disk that I
created once finished the installation of the win2k3 Ent Corp server. So, I
am asking anyone out here please tell me where I can find such an ASR disk
to try to recover my win2k3 Ent Copr svr to its original stage instead of
re-installing from scratch. If U have such an ASR disk and would like to
help, send it to my yahoo account asr4mi (not asr4me). I know of risking
some incompatibility and/or some data lost. Afterall, this is my second
last resort, instead of re-installation.

Thanks.

The files you need for the floppy are in the %systemroot%\repair folder.

That directory contains some 10MB files, but tno asr*.sif files. Apparently,
the backup I did only reposited to the lost disk. If no one can help to
provide a fresh ASR disk, I might as well go through some tedious process
to replace the existing drive with a new one to install a copy of Win2k3
Ent Corp on to another drive to get the copy of the ASR disk and then
replace back the crashed drive to see if I can recover it with the new ASR
disk.

Can you do a system state restore from your backup? If this is a domain
controller, you will need to boot into Directory Services Restore mode.

I can't. The only thing I can do with the system right now is to boot into
"safe mode with prompt". If I boot into a "safe mode", there is nothing I
can launch. While in the "safe mode with prompt", I could not even run the
programs. The only program I could try was asr_fmt.exe; however, it did not
find any asr*.sif file under %windir%\repair directory. I believe my last
two resorts are either to try to recover with a fresh ASR disk from a newly
installed Win2k3 Ent Corp system or completely re-install the win2k3 Ent
Corp with a reformat on the drive. My preference is to go with a fresh ASR
disk from a newly (other) installed Win2k3 Ent Corp system mainly because
it will safe me some efforts, instead of a fresh installation.

OK. That is not a bad idea and what would I do once I am logged in? What I

Default Re: Desperate Looking for newly installed Win2k3 Ent Corp ASR diskOK,

Impossible to say until you try it and see what your results are. I am
guessing/hoping that you have some corrupt system files or possibly MBR/disk
errors that will be fixed as part of a repair install. There is a
reasonable chance that your desktop will be recovered as a result of the
repair installation. With any luck you will simply have to reapply Windows
updates and possibly install/update some drivers.

Note if the repair install finds disk errors, that's a good thing - it will
attempt to repair them and that alone may solve the problem.
Also Note - you can do this with a domain controller - you will not lose
Active Directory - or at least, a repair install will not be the cause of
losing it.

Default Re: Desperate Looking for newly installed Win2k3 Ent Corp ASR diskOK,

I don't think my server has any MBR/disk errors; otherwise, I won't be able
to boot into the "safe mode with prompt" or even boot in a "Normal" mode.
The problem on my server after it crashed is there is no icons, explorer,
and the desktop is empty (no system and/or task bar), except in the "safe
modem with command prompt. So, I can't launch any program. I pressed
CTRL+ALT+DEL keys and a windows task pops up. I click "Task Manager" button
and nothing happens (I was hoping to launch a CLI from the task manager).
So, I am left with a running server without any input to the console. When
the system is in the "safe mode with a command prompt", the system prompted
with the following messages, when trying to launch the "control" panel,
similar to this:

"Windows is running in safe mode.

This special diagnostic mode of Windows enables you to fix a problem which
may be caused by your network or hardware settings. Make sure these
settings are correct in Control Panel, and then try starting Windows again.
While in the safe mode, some of your devices may not be available."

With the above messages, how can I ensure the settings are correct in
Control Panel while I can't launch Control Panel. I tried to launch each
*.cpl file and nothing came up neither.

There is one thing I have noticed since the crashed: The server always shows
a login prompt with the last user entry. Before the system crashed, it went
into a screen saver mode after booting process.

Sorry - meant MFT not MBR. If chkdsk is corrupt or autocheck parameter is
set to 0, the MFT mirror will not automatically restore it. This is one of
several disk repairs which the repair install will perform. What happened
when you tried the repair install?

Default Re: Desperate Looking for newly installed Win2k3 Ent Corp ASR diskOK,

The repair disk went well without detecting any problem. The drive missing
d:\ I reported earlier has been recovered. I just used diskpart to active
the partition. Also, I found out having ASR disk from other freshly
installed Win2k3 Ent Corp will not help mainly because each ASR file
contains the volume ID of the disk and I can't find the volume ID of the
win2k3 machine in trouble. I also did boot with domain control recovery and
it did not fix the problem; however, I noticed tasklist showed more running
processes. It is just the damn thing that I can't fire up the control panel
even through the command prompt.

Default Re: Desperate Looking for newly installed Win2k3 Ent Corp ASR diskOK,

There is one thing I just noticed when I booted the system into a normal
mode a logon with administrator account, `whoami' returns with "nt
authority\system" instead of "administrator". I just don't know what caused
this twist and don't know how to fix it.

Default Re: Desperate Looking for newly installed Win2k3 Ent Corp ASR diskOK,

Did you get your desktop back? If not, did you do a full repair install or
just use the repair an existing installation option? If you did a full
repair install and still have no desktop - dunno - never had that happen.
Is explorer.exe one of the running processes? Try:

and

Default Re: Desperate Looking for newly installed Win2k3 Ent Corp ASR diskOK,

What did U mean by full repair installation? I went into the repair
installation and did "chkdsk c: /R" (including d: drive) for the second
time and chkdsk did not find any error/corruption. Exited and rebooted to a
normal boot and explorer did not come up (the whole desktop is blank, i.e.
no icons, no taskbar, and no system bar). Press CTRL+ALT+DEL only bring up
the task windows and clicking the "Task Manager" icon does nothing. Also, I
have been getting RUNDLL message: Error loading newdev.dll. A dynamic link
library (DLL) initialization routine failed.

BTW, I have the FireDaemon utility installed and am able to use this
FireDaemon to create a command prompt through the service. So, an instance
of command prompt gets launched when I boot in normal mode. Having the
command prompt in the normal mode, I tried manually launch taskmgr.exe in
c:\windows\system32 directory to no avail. It returns with a message saying
"The system cannot execute the specified program". Launching control.exe,
explorer.exe, and almost all the .exe file also produce nothing. BTW,
network is not working neither even in the normal mode (pconfig yields
nothing; ping to yahoo.com gets Destination unreachable -- looks like no
route). So, what else can I do with repair installation that only has
limited utilities?

The link you provided could not solve the problem, neither. The following
link asks to check the READ permission on the %SystemRoot% drive:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;162031

And, if I may ask, how to perform the permission check of a directory along
with the necessary to modify the permission using a command prompt?

Looks like, I need to re-install.

Default Re: Desperate Looking for newly installed Win2k3 Ent Corp ASR diskOK,

OK, this is what you have to do:

1. Boot from the CD. Do not hit F2, let all the drivers load up and you
will come to a screen which says:

To set up Windows now press ENTER

To repair a Windows installation ....etc.

2. DO NOT SELECT TO REPAIR - You must press ENTER - you are going to
reinstall the entire operating system

3. Press F8 to accept the license.

4. Setup will then search for an existing installation and you will get a
new screen. If setup finds an existing installation, one of your options
is:

'To repair the selected Windows installation press R'

So PRESS R.

5. Setup will start by checking your disks. If there are no errors, setup
will proceed through an entire reinstallation of the operating system, but
your applications etc. will be preserved. Note: If setup finds errors when
it checks your disks, it will fix them and reboot. You must then go through
the entire above process all over again. Thereafter, setup will complete
the repair install.

6. If setup is unable to repair the existing installation it will notify
you. At that point you may have no choice but to do a clean install - but
that's pretty much where you are now anyway. In most cases the 'full repair
install' will get you up and running normally. You will have to reapply
updates and possibly install some drivers.

Default Re: Desperate Looking for newly installed Win2k3 Ent Corp ASR diskOK,

DOne that 10 hrs ago and it did not work. Then, I took a decision to
completely re-install from scratch. After the installation, I tried the
backup procedure and it created a backup.bkf file without ASR disk and
%WinDir%\repair shows no sigh of any *.sif files. I manually launch
"asr_fmt /backup /context=ASR" and still could not find any *.sif file in
the repair directory. Somthing weird is going. Anyway, I did a full upgrade
and am still unable to create the ASR disk even though I follow the backup
procedure and/or shown on this page:

Something must be wrong.

Default Re: Desperate Looking for newly installed Win2k3 Ent Corp ASR diskOK,

This whole thing started out because you lost the ASR disk. I don't know
what happens if you try to CREATE an ASR backup set without a floppy. If
you create an ASR backup WITH a floppy, the .sif files are also created in
WINDOWS\Repair. You can then copy them to another floppy in the event you
lose the original. A non-ASR backup does not create such files. If an ASR
backup is desireable and the machine does not have a floppy drive, I suggest
you buy one - about $10 - you're going to need it if you want to do an ASR
restore anyway.

I don't understand the article you cite at all - what use is an ASR floppy
for a machine which doesn't have a floppy drive - maybe you could map a
drive to a shared floppy for an ASR restore?
