    If the PDF is Acrobat 6 compatible, trying to open it in an earlier version would warn the user that it is not compatible and point them to adobe.com to download the latest reader (although it could still be viewed.

    I can't see how a PDF could detect this prior to attempting to open. You could probably write a little application that could do this - in Java or the like - but that would complicate matters for the user.

    It would be better to just make the PDF backward compatible in the first instance.

    I use a freeware program called AutoRun which runs from the root of any CD I create.
    I got it from download.com a long time ago. Not sure if it's still available.

    The autorun.inf file contains the following line:
    "
    [autorun]
    open=autorun.exe -f -q filename.pdf Adobe\AcroReader51_ENU.exe
    "
    What happens is that the program detects if I have any Adobe readers or full versions installed and if not, it automatically starts the install reader program I'm pointing to.
    If I do, it opens the PDF file using the version of Acrobat installed on the computer.

    It works really well for me.
