Default Dictionary changes in Spell Check

Default Language is set to 'English UK' in Character palette options, for use in Australia (used to have 'English Australian' dictionary but it has disappeared). While spell checking a 24pp document, language switches intermittently to either 'German:Swiss' or 'English UK', resulting in common, correctly spelled words being flagged as mis-spelt. This only seems to have started since updating InDesign CS2 to 4.0.3. Any ideas?

If the text is placed from Word for instance, it brings with it the dictionary used there. Just select whole story and assign the desired dictionary. Or assign a dictionary to the style used. Or check the styles used - which dictionary do the styles use?

So select all, in Character palette select the desired language, plus check your styles if they have the correct language or not. Note too that if text is immported from MS Word, the language dictionary used there will come in with the text so you might have to reapply a paragraph style with the correct language after placing and cleaning the paragraph of incoming formatting.

Make sure your text has a language applied to it.
Otherwise, spell check will not run on it.

Thanks for all the help, it got me thinking so I opened another CS2 program ran the spell checker, then returned to In Design and to my amazement it was working.

Thanks Nini, therein lies the answer. Tracked it down to one MS Word story that originated from a customer, carrying the baggage of a German: Swiss dictionary (no idea why or how - we are in Sydney, Australia!). That transferred to the InDesign publication, so Spell Checker went wacko went it got to that story.

Also, I had Word's default dictionary on my Mac set to English: Australian, which apparently does not exist in InDesign, so InD Spell Checker ignores stories with that dictionary applied, appearing not to work. Have now changed both Word and InD defaults to English: UK and it works fine.
