Default Dictionary language switches language during spellcheck

During a spellcheck of a complete document, the language mysteriously switches from English USA (which in Canada isn't quite right, but that's another issue) to German Reformed, Finnish, Dutch, German Swiss, etc. You cannot toggle the language during the spellcheck, so I have stopped the process, toggled a few buttons in various places to try and reset it and begin again. All is fine until about half way through the document and then the langauge switches again! Of course 99% of the English words are wrong. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm using InDesign CS on Windows XP.

Have you checked to see what language is being used by the text in question?

Can text copy have a language attached to it? I can only find dictionary language in the Preferences, and again under Edit>Check Spelling and >Dictionary. The document is continuous and the text is not linked to any other source.

    It's a feature...not a bug!

After working with Quark for 14 years, I switched to InDesign in January and love it. Now that I know about this feature, I can see how useful it can be. Not sure how I managed to tag the paragraphs with various languages, but I'll pay closer attention next time.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments & help. When you work alone you sometimes have to ask the world for answers to dumb questions.
