Did I just get ripped off? - Mac Applications & Software

Tonight I paid for and downloaded OpenOSX Office from openosx.com. After getting it all installed, the startup says: XDarwin launched then unexpectedly failed. Please check the OroborOSX web page... Which doesn't respond. Such a helpful diagnostic... and then no faq. Is this a scam, or did I just hit a bad night? -- Jack...

A bit of both if you ask me. I bought into it also, but am using

All OpenOSX software and OpenOffice is freely available online. I am
on slow dial-up which is why I bought the cd package from them. I had a
friend on cable download OpenOffice for me

It was looking for a window manager. OpenOSX recommends OroborOSX as
a good window manager. I felt lucky in Google and found them at
    <http://oroborosx.sourceforge.net/>
but if you have X11 installed, it should work OK in that.

I also have fink installed and was the main reason I dumped OpenOSX -
    incompatible installations with The GIMP.

Took me a while to figure a few things out too with the unix core of
    X. But I like it - I am still figuring things out, but fink makes life
so much easier on the unix side of the house!

Well if you paid $$ and got an error message you darn well insist on
getting tech support from Open OSX to fix your problem. Usually the
price the distributors charge is for packaging and tech support (which
of cause you are usually 'on your own' via the free route).

How come Openoffice looks like a pc type theme, is their a way to get
it to look like OS X?

No. It looks like that because it has not yet been ported to work correctly
with OS X's window manager-that's why you need to install an X server such
as Apple's X11. From what I've read recently, there will be an Aqua version
of Open Office, but that is years off in the future.

However, there are Window Managers that look like Aqua.
    OrobourOSX is one.
